Otter Island

This level is currently in its early greybox state and has been colorized for visual interest and establishing the aesthetics of the world.

…This level is focused on exploration and play. Being the curious otter he is, Otto will interact with props and items he finds in the world to help him to open paths to guide him as he delivers a mysterious orb to the top of the rocky cliff.

Otter island is a dream in the mind of a sleeping otter. This level exists to be a cross section of the final game, Otto the Otter, and help players to see what the final game will play like. It is currently in early development and the core elements of the game are still being established.

Level Layout

The level has an intentional verticality for the sake of making the most of exploration in a small space, which can be seen from the beachy coves below the cliff…


…To the hidden paths of the caves up high.

Eventually Otto will have the freedom to explore the depths below the water since swimming and grace are so integral to otters. But for now, he will remain on land while his ground movement continues to make improvements.

As an otter, the gameplay is driven by curiosity and play with interactable objects and environments.

Movement

Otto the Otter is a 3D Platformer with a heavy focus on freedom in movement. Currently Otto has a few basic abilities: walking, running (scampering), jumping, diving, and sliding. All of these are currently being developed and fine tuned. However, the basic movement exists for the purpose of determining the scale and scope of the level.

All assets, including models, animations, and scripts have been hand made by me.

Future Goals

Otter Island will be a fully realized level with a main objective driving the player to the end. Players will discover and deliver a mysterious orb to an abandoned ruin with a mystical looking pedestal at the top of the cliff. What the significance of these cryptic treasures is is up to the player to find out! The towering cliff will feature multiple caverns to explore both above and below the water’s surface. Otto will eventually be able to gracefully glide through the water and explore all of the depths of this dreamscape ocean in the sky.

For now, the main structures of the level will continue to be blocked out, and Otto’s character controller will be tuned to suit the environment as both of these are adjusted to compliment one another.
